Food on the train to Pasco and back

2025-Aug-28

I leave home giving myself 2 hours to get to the train station, so I have plenty of time to charge the car. I’m probably leaving too much time here, but I like to be early. I can get early lunch in Santa Fe.

On the way down I’ll eat dinner from a pouch, then breakfast from my stash.

In LA, I’ll get something at the station if there is time. If not, it’s another pouch.

Going North I seem to keep getting on the San Jaoquins, which has a bunch of bags of chips you can take for free.

In Sacramento I can get dinner, I have about 6 hours to wait.

Portland I only get about an hour, but I can grab a sandwich at Subway. If it’s tight, it’s another pouch.

Dinner on the way to Pasco.

Total worst case: three pouches. Normal case: 2 pouches. You can buy food on the train so whatever.

Leaving Pasco it makes sense to have breakfast in my room. The train is scheduled to arrive at 6:45, and it’s 15m to the station, so I like to leave at 6:00 so I have a nice big window.

If the train is on time, I get an hour or so for lunch in Portland. I like to go down to the Pine Street Market for ramen, then I’ll buy a sandwich at Subway by the train station for dinner. Dinner will be that sandwich, on the train.

Breakfast the next day has to happen in the Sacramento train station. This is when I’ll break out my triscuits and avocados: it’s like avocado toast :)

Lunch is a tasty bite on the San Jaoquin train South. They give you unlimited free chips, but I try to eat actual food in addition.

Dinner is going to be at Taco Del Mar in San Bernadino, a 10-minute walk from the train station.

Breakfast is more triscuits and avocado, and lunch is another tasty bite.

Then I’m back in Lamy :)
